Bundle Up for the Winter Solstice

As we prepare for yuletide festivities and cooler temperatures, take a moment on December 21 to celebrate the winter solstice. Yet another season has arrived, offering us time to reflect on growth as we approach the end of the calendar year. Days are now shorter, and the air is chillier. Do not let external melancholia interfere with your personal transformation. Instead of hibernating, appreciate the wintery weather this season. Take a step back, reflect, and plan your activities as you head into a new year.

The solstice also marks the beginning of Capricorn season, which means that we are looking back at the past in an effort to change as we move forward in our lives. Honoring and remembering yesteryear is a wonderful way to find the path that aligns with one’s goals and desires. Now is also the time to manifest your visions during the upcoming days to ensure that you’re moving into the new season on a high. Refresh. Restart. Reboot. This will bring personal happiness and fulfillment in the months ahead.

As we toast auld lang syne and bid farewell to 2021, try to reflect, remember, and move towards the future with high hopes. 2022 promises to be a better year than the past two. So, let’s all welcome winter with warm hearts, merriment, and cheer.

Winter Solstice Activities

The solstice is a wonderful time to connect with family and friends. Invite the people you care about over for a feast with all of the season’s delectable foods (stews, hearty soups, root vegetables, and puddings for dessert). Also, wine, beer, tea, and cider are essential drinks to toast the new season. You may even want to have a potluck dinner and let your guests plan the menu.

Being that the solstice is the shortest day of the year, we honor the sun by wishing and wanting its return to us.  A great way to pay reference to the sun during the solstice is to light white candles around the home to purify the energy and cleanse the home for the upcoming season. The sun‘s light gives everyone and everything life on earth, which is what we will celebrate and pay tribute to on the solstice.

Additionally, altar work is essential on the solstice. Cleansing and clearing the altar for the upcoming season will allow you to set new intentions and manifest your hopes in the upcoming months. Switch up the energy of your altar by adding seasonal staples, such as pine cones, bells, red wine for the spirits, and winter colors to help your manifestations along.

Lighting a yule log and placing it in the fireplace is a protective activity for the solstice. It’s said that the yule log serves as a great way to ward off evil entities or spirits that come our way during the winter solstice. In fact, due to the lack of sunshine in the day, many people believe that this gives way for mischievous energies, entities, or sprites to create havoc in our homes and lives. Luckily, the lighting of the yule log will protect us all from negative vibes.

Exchanging gifts with loved ones is also an important solstice tradition. Whether or not you celebrate the holidays, it’s nice to give those you care about a token of your appreciation. After all, the new year is coming soon, and it’s a generous gesture to let people know that they are in your thoughts. The presents you give don’t have to be large. They could simply be something that you made yourself. If you are feeling the seasonal joy, you may opt to give a charitable donation in the names of those to whom you are giving presents. Or, you can start a toy drive in which you give gifts to those in need.

Although the temperature is getting cooler outside, it’s a wonderful time of the year to take a walk and connect with nature. Breathe in the fresh and crisp wintery air as you walk through your town. Embracing nature is a way to show Mother Earth how much we honor and appreciate the abundance that is given to us. Seeing nature in all its glory is also a wakeup call from the universe to be grateful.

5 Ordinary Objects for Practical Everyday Magic

It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the witchy stuff out there. Between all the crystals, Tarot decks, moon journals (plus having an astrologer on speed-dial), there are so many sexy spiritual accessories that sometimes it’s hard to know where to begin. What do you really need—and which items are more of an unnecessary luxury?

While a fully decked-out altar looks lovely on Instagram, it won’t necessarily make you happy. And she who dies with the most crystals still, well, dies. So, as much as I love “stuff,” I’m happiest spending my money on experiences, or things that connect me to something greater. Scroll below to see the ordinary objects that I find the most magical, but also most practical.

Read This Now: The Most Powerful Crystals for Your Zodiac Sign

Fresh Flowers

https://www.instagram.com/p/BwaVHB5neBS/

A bunch of roses or tulips is not a luxury! They cost about the same as an oversized drink from your favorite caffeine corporation, and they will give you much more joy. I always have pink roses on my altar, a purple orchid on my coffee table, and—often—a bunch of tulips in my living room. They remind me of the beauty that is all around us (if we will just open our eyes and look), connect me to the earth, and bring a beautiful spark to my home. They are worth every penny and more.

An Aura Photo

https://www.instagram.com/p/BtLvivhHVtk/

If you don’t know what your aura looks like, how can you live with yourself?  Get thee to an aura photographer stat! If you’re in New York City, get down to Chinatown and visit Magic Jewelry for a quick photo and a reading that will blow your mind.

The shot, which shows your aura—a rainbow of colors that can help decode what you’re projecting in your everyday interactions—is a great visual example of how there’s so much more to you than meets the eye. Not in NYC? One of my dear friends Christina runs a traveling aura photography studio called Radiant Human, and her photos are to die for. Beloved by the fashion set, her aura portraits are so beautiful they’re worth framing.

A Magical Manicure

https://www.instagram.com/p/BwXn8sGHhAV/

Our hands are the very tips of our body: They are what we use to create, to touch, and to receive information. They are the primary way we send energy from our body into the universe. We communicate with our hands all day—typing messages on our phones and computers, gesticulating, and adding flourishes to our body language.

So here’s the deal: A sparkly, gem-encrusted, or otherwise fabulous manicure actually emphasizes the energy you’re putting out. When you honor your hands, you are honoring yourself and your expression. A magical manicure makes you more mindful of what you’re about to make manifest. And I am convinced that I am a better writer when my manicure is on point!

A Bright Wallet

Comme Des Garçons Women’s Leather Pink Wallet, $137

Your wallet is your ultimate symbol of abundance. So what is it saying? If your wallet is old, ripped, overstuffed, or (even worse) nonexistent, how does that vibe translate to your life? And in what way is that manifesting in your finances? Yeah, I see you there, gulping nervously as you think about the stained wallet you’ve been using for the last five years! It’s time to clear it out and get a swift upgrade. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to cost your weekly paycheck, like the gorgeous GG Blooms number below. I have an iridescent pink faux-reptile skin wallet from Georgia Mae that I adore. In addition to bringing me untold amounts of happiness, it also send out great money vibes!

A Self-Love Routine That Works

https://www.instagram.com/p/BlDrSlolzt3/

I left the most important one for last. It’s essential to figure out what you need to make you happy. If I skip my meditation practice, don’t work out (or at least stretch), ignore calls from my friends, and refuse to do something creative, I’ll sink into a deep slump. We need to top up our emotional tank every single day: The effect is cumulative.

Everything You Need to Know About Reading Tea Leaves

Everything You Need to Know About Reading Tea Leaves

Everything You Need to Know About Reading Tea Leaves

Tasseography, the art of reading tea leaves, is a form of divination that originated in Europe during the 17th century when the Chinese Trade Route brought tea to the continent. If done right, much like a psychic reading, tea leaves can foretell the tell the future, or give you some hot advice with every sip.

Reading Tea Leaves: What Is It?

I learned about tasseography the way I learned about most things: from Harry Potter. As I read Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, I was enchanted by the thought of reading tea leaves like the trio did in divination class. While no one in the book took the leaves seriously (apparently at magic high school, predicting the future via tea is too far-fetched), I was curious on how to see the future, using a simple cup of tea.

Read This Now: 5 Ways to Strengthen Your Psychic Ability

Fast forward years later, I attended a tea reading class the kids at the metaphysical club had put together (yay, liberal arts college!) where I got a crash course in tasseography, and I’ve been practicing ever since.

If you’re curious to see what’s brewing in your future, follow me as I give you my blend of tea readings, one mug at a time.

Tea Leaf Symbolism and How-To Guides for Beginners

What’s great about reading tea leaves is that it’s more personal than Tarot or palmistry, and there are no firm rules to what each symbol has to mean. While both our cups can have a bird in it, we can come up with different meanings. For example, when I see a horse, I think of power and movement, but it can have a completely different meaning to someone else. Just go with your gut.

If you are completely drawing a blank, there are plenty of tea leaf reading guides, like Dennis Fairchild’s A Divination Guide for the Bottom of Your Cup, to give you a hand. And for those who need a little extra guidance, you can always use The Cup of Destiny, a beginner’s kit complete with a decorated cup and detailed instructions.

Here’s a quick step-by-step guide to reading tea leaves.

How to Read Tea Leaves

starry tea cups

What You Need:

  • A White Mug (Teacup preferred)
  • Loose Leaf Tea. (Any kind but I prefer Salem Witch blend from Adagio teas)
  • A Small Plate
  • Paper
  • Pen

Instructions:

Step #1: Brew your tea like you always do. Loose leaf tea is the traditional and preferred method of tea readings, but if you don’t have loose leaf, a tea bag is fine. Wait until it’s fully steeped and most of the leaves sink. As the tea steeps, quite your mind.

Step #2: Sip your tea slowly, holding the cup in your weaker hand—if you’re right-handed, hold it in your left, and vice-versa. While you’re drinking, think about the questions you’re asking. For example, I asked what lay ahead for me in the next six months. Drink until there is only a half of a swallow of liquid left. If you are using a tea bag, now is the time to cut it.

Read This Now: 19 Life Hacks for the Modern Boss Witch

Pro Tip: If you’re drinking loose leaf tea, place your mouth around the rim of the cup and sip that way to prevent yourself from accidentally choking on tea leaves like I did.

Step #3: Swirl the cup three times counterclockwise. Turn the plate upside down and place it on top of the mug. Tip the cup over so most of the liquid and tea leaves can spill onto the plate. What remains is your reading. If there are no leaves left in your cup, you have too much water left. Pour the liquid and leaves from the plate back into the mug and drink until only a little bit of liquid remains.

Step #4: Hold out the mug in front of you and read your leave clockwise, writing down everything you see, all shapes and symbols, anything that jumps out at you.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BzTkVytDDW-/

For example, when I first looked down at my cup, I immediately said horse, because that’s what I saw. Again, don’t worry about something being ridiculous or not—just write it down, then we’ll tackle symbolism. If you are having trouble seeing anything, walk away from it for a while or take a picture, with a little distance, it might all become clear. What I saw in my mug was: a horse in mid-jump, a smile, a bird, an S, New Jersey, and some floating leaves.

Step #5: After you wrote down what you saw, it’s time to focus on where it’s placed. The closer the leaves are to the center of the cup, the more distance it is in the future. So if there are leaves in the center of the cup, that’s the distant future or outcome. Your cup handle is your starting point, representing yourself.

Can I Do This With Coffee?

Yes! If you’re not a big tea drinker, you can also read coffee grounds to get your divination fix. Just follow the steps above and replace tea with coffee.

Embrace Your Power—5 Types of Witches and Witchcraft

Witchcraft seems like a particularly buzzy topic these days, with books, blogs, and more delivering ancient magic to a modern audience. But while stylized Tarot cards and light-catching crystals have their place, the shift from intrigued observer to practicing pagan can be a daunting one. So why not start the process by determining which brand of witchery resonates with you?

Read on to learn about five specialized takes on witchcraft, where the variants came from, and which type of witchcraft resonates most with you.

Astrology

What is an astrologer? An astrologer, or cosmic witch, is a witch who uses planetary and celestial energy in their practice. They study and feel a personal and spiritual connection with not only the main planets in our solar system, but with asteroids, meteors, supernovas, stars, constellations, galaxies, and black holes. Cosmic witches pay particular attention to astrology, horoscopes, and zodiac signs—but that only gives us a picture of how the cosmic forces influence the individual. Cosmic witches are focused on how celestial energy influences the inner self, but also the world.

History: Cosmic witches have been around since the study of planets. According to the American Federation of Astrologers, the Babylonians are credited with the birth of astrology. They used their astrological charts to predict the “recurrence of seasons and certain celestial events.” Around 2000 B.C., Babylonian astrologers believed that the sun, moon, and the five known planets (Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto had yet to be discovered) all had distinct character traits (Mercury representing communication, Venus representing affection, and so on). Cosmic witches use these planetary traits to call upon their energy. For example, many witches choose to perform spells on a full moon because the full illumination can create an extra magical boost and enchantment—and the rock itself is said to align with emotions and the soul.

Modern cosmic witches: A present-day cosmic witch may not be using astrology to predict the weather, but rather to predict future events or influences. For example, it’s beneficial for a cosmic witch to know when Mercury is in retrograde, and in which sign, because it will allow them to determine where communication breakdowns will occur, and in what guise. If a cosmic which was planning to perform a love spell, their best chance of having it being successful during a new moon which corresponds with new beginnings and relationships.

Divination

What is a divination witch? A divination witch uses their magic to try to predict the future, often employing a variety of tools—or one that resonates. There are so many mediums with which to connect into the magic of the world: think Tarot cards, oracle cards, a pendulum, the I Ching, palmistry, and tasseography, and more.

History: Divination and divination witches have existed in just about every time period in history. In ancient Greece, divination witches were known as Oracles, and it was believed that deities spoke through them. A famous oracle was high priestess Pythia—known as the Oracle of Delphi—who was thought to be the mouthpiece of the god, Apollo. Every culture has its own form of divination. In ancient China, the diviner would carve out their question onto an ox bone until it cracked, and then the cracks were analyzed.

Modern divination witches: Today, divination witches don’t claim to be the mouthpiece of the gods; instead they use divination to predict likely answers to simple queries like, “Am I on the right career path?” or “Does this relationship stand a chance?” And in true modern fashion, divination methods like Tarot can even be found on our phones.

Herbalism

green witch

What is a green witch? A green witch works with magical properties found in the natural world. Their craft is based on respecting nature and all living things. Green witches focus on the magical correspondence of herbs, plants, and flowers. This incorporates herbalism, which is the study of botany and use of plants intended for medicinal purposes.

History: Herbalism is found in many cultures, but Chinese herbal medicine is one of the ancient variations still practiced today. Chinese herbology is based on the concepts of yin, yang, and Qi energy, where the herbs can either cool (yin) or stimulate (yang) certain parts of the body, the concept used for ritual and spiritual practices as well as medicinal. In parts of Africa, an herb known as purslane was used for purification during and after ritual ceremonies, while in some Scandinavian countries, clover was once used to ward off evils spirits and help develop psychic ability. In folk magic tradition, chamomile is said known to bring luck.

Modern green witches: Today, green witches still take herbal magic very seriously, using essential oils and creating small physic gardens in their own apartment. (You can find plenty of green witches on Instagram for inspo!) Be aware that this is a learned art: it’s extremely important to know the health effects of the herbs you plan to use or ingest as well as the magical benefits.

Kitchen Witch

kitchen

What is a kitchen witch? A kitchen witch practices magic within their own home. Their magic is not based on any divine power or spiritual guidance, but that magic that can be found in the everyday routine. Their craft comes out while cooking, baking, and nesting while tapping into the power of their own intention.

History: Witchcraft and cooking have always gone hand-in-hand. During the late 15th and mid-18th century many of the 200,000 witches (mostly women) were tortured, hanged, or burned at the stake were accused of poisoning food. Even now, our classic image of a witch persists as a woman stirring her cauldron. There has always been a magical and ritualistic nature surrounding food. Like green witchcraft, kitchen witches use herbalism in their food-based magic—but kitchen witchery isn’t just about food. It can also be making a homemade offering to a deity, cleansing and protection your home, and so on.

Water Witch

woman in water

What is a water witch? A sea witch, also known as a water witch, works with the element water in order to tap into their magic. They feel a deep, powerful connection to the water—whether it is the ocean, sea, or lake. This powerful pull leads them to be more aware of their own mystical energies.

History: Sea witches have been found in many cultures throughout history. From the sea nymph Calypso of The Odyssey; Sycorax of Shakespeare’s play The Tempest; even Ursula in Disney’s The Little Mermaid. However, sea witches have a deeper history in mythology. In Norse mythology, sea witches were magical, malevolent feminine spirits who often took the form of mermaids. These witches believed that their power and bond over the sea and tides was born of their worship for the moon. The triple goddess symbol holds particularly deep meaning for sea witches, as it represents the three phases of the monthly lunar cycle: waxing, full, and waning.

Along with praying to the moon, sea witches have had a long history with practicing dowsing, a method of divination for finding water, metals, even gravesites underground by using a Y-shaped stick made of hazel. Dowsing has been around since the Middle Ages, used frequently in Europe until its association with witchcraft caused the practice to be shunned; its legitimacy as a science is still up for debate.

Modern sea witches: Contemporary sea witches may not be luring sailors to their deaths, but they are still incorporating water, weather, and the moon into their practices, finding their own magical connection with the sea.

What's In Spencer Pratt's Spiritual Tool Kit?

What’s In Spencer Pratt’s Spiritual Tool Kit?

What's In Spencer Pratt's Spiritual Tool Kit?

Welcome to “What’s in Your Spiritual Tool Kit,” a new series where we talk to notable lovers of all things ~mystical~ to find out the tools they use to stay grounded. First up: The Hills’ star, famed crystal lover Spencer Pratt!

You know Spencer Pratt as the iconic “villain” of The Hills. Or perhaps you’ve seen him on Celebrity Big Brother. Or I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here. Or one of the other multitudes of shows that he and his wife—Heidi Pratt (nee Montag)—have appeared on.

Read This Now: Crystal Cleansing 101: Everything You Need to Know

Here are some more things you should know about Spencer: He’s a devoted father, a huge fan of all things hummingbirds, and crystals have changed his life. That’s right: The guy who brought you all the drama on reality TV now swears by the healing power of precious gems—he even sells his own collection!

We caught up with Spencer to talk about how he got into crystals, how he uses them in the bedroom, and which crystals he carried with him as he was shooting MTV’s current reboot of The Hills.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bm952yanh4V/

How’d you get into crystals?

I got into crystals a few years back when Heidi had a surgical procedure or two…maybe more. The pain killers were not working, and it was horrible watching her be in pain all night long, so I started researching alternative healing methods.

I came upon crystals, and I read about Sugilite, which people can hold while they sleep to get rid of nightmares and have really good sleep. I went and bought like a 15 thousand dollar chunk of it, because at the time I thought I was Tom Cruise. I  certainly spent like I was.

Read This Now: The Most Powerful Crystals for Your Zodiac Sign

She held it all through the night, finally slept, and said it was the most magical thing ever. I don’t think it’s physically possible to fake your brain out of that much pain. I don’t know if it was the placebo effect, but it  helped the person I loved most so I was all in. I turned into dang Harry Potter for a good couple years. I went a little too deep. Crystals have really changed my life, though.

What is your greatest wish? Find out if it will come true now…

How do you get too deep into crystals?

When you take a crystal wand everywhere you go and you build portals before you enter a room, and you block people’s energy with your wand, yeah, you’re a little deep.

It’s a little better now. Obviously, I still believe crystals have energy levels, especially because I have my own crystal collection, but to me the brand is this: Beauty is energy and I find so much beauty in the crystals. And that creates energy and healing regardless of whether you can tune into the crystal’s actual energy. They’re for everyone.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bhj9e9cAuyG/

What crystals do you always carry with you?

I try to always have Moldavite on me. Recently I’ve been carrying aquamarine, and I always try to have Kunzite on me.

Moldavite has proven to work in psychic protection. When  I did Celebrity Big Brother, I didn’t wear any Moldavite and I was attacked by the housemates in all of my dreams, crazy dark stories. When I came back to do All-Stars, I made sure to wear Moldavite on a chain 24/7. I slept like a freaking angelic little baby.

Kunzite helps with self-love and reminds me to  just always be aware of being a loving entity and energy. Aquamarine makes you feel calm,  gives you courage, and helps you with self-expression. I need a lot of that when I’m shooting.

What crystal would you take into a crisis?

If it’s a crisis where I need protection, Black Tourmaline. But if it’s a crisis where I’m supposed to be a positive force in the situation—Amethyst or Ametrine. Ametrine is Amethyst with citrine so that could bring in more support and a feeling of abundance to the situation.

Do you use any crystals  ~*~ in the bedroom ~*~?

Next to the bed we have two Hawaiian Amethysts. I have 14 Ametrine floaters on my bedside table. And we don’t use any of those crystal eggs in Heidi’s vagina or whatever. She just looked at me weird, but it’s a thing. And it’s actually very bad for you, so you shouldn’t do it. I don’t care what Gwyneth says.

I’ve been told not to have anything but Rose Quartz by my bed, because it’s pure love. I know I’m breaking the rules here, but I  think Amethyst is more helpful with healing and balancing. We had Rose Quartz by our bed for eight years and we just recently switched it to the bathtub. Heidi says we should probably switch back.

Which crystal makes you happiest?

Whichever is my newest. Right now it’s smoky Amethyst Elestial Scepter from Zimbabwe, from the Shangaan tribe. It makes me feel like I’m on the right path. Actually, I also love Smoky Elestial Quartz, I have one that looks like a tiger shark in the way it’s striped — and I just feel like a tiger shark moving through the water. It makes me feel strong.

What crystal are you taking back on The Hills with you?

It’s Moldavite all the way. Gotta stop those psychic attacks before they start.

Does your son (Gunner) wear any crystals yet?

Gunner’s mommy doesn’t let him wear too many crystals because she’s worried that he’ll swallow them but I would say he loves to play with citrine the most since he loves wealth.

You know what? Gunner’s just a big crystal himself.  Can I say what’s my favorite crystal? it’s Gunner. He keeps me grounded, he keeps me protected, he’s a miracle.

Color Magic: The Ultimate Guide to Color Meanings and Everyday Uses

Color holds certain powers in our society. A bride wears white on her wedding day, a grieving family wears black to a funeral, red doors are supposed to bring good luck, and a red dress may just give you the spice you need on a first date. What started as cultural norm has weaved itself into our personal lives. But did you know that each color has a magical property? Welcome to color magic, my friends.

What Is Color Magic?

Color magic is about using special color energies in order to manifest certain things you want in life. Similar to the herbs or crystals you use in your witchcraft, using certain colors can bring forth the properties you wish to manifest, like wealth or confidence.

Some witches use color magic by using certain colored candles, flowers, or crystals for their spell work. But you can use color magic in your daily life, just by doing some simple things. For instance, if you’ve ever dressed in a certain color before a big job interview or decorated your room a certain specific color, then you’ve already had some experience with color magic.

Here are some simple ways to incorporate color into your everyday life.

Color Meanings & Symbolism

Black — Protection

black

Symbolizes: Protection

When most people think of black, they tend to associate it with death. Actually, black focuses more on safety and protection than dying. In all things, black represents grounding, strength, and wards against negativity.

Everyday Uses: Wear a black jacket out to protect you, hang black curtains on your windows to ward off negative energies, welcome a black house cat to dispel demons, sleep in black sheets to block bad dreams, or wear black sunglasses to block out the haters.

Black Crystals: Black tourmaline, black obsidian

White — Peace and Balance

white

Symbolizes: Peace and balance

It’s no surprise that love symbolizes purity and unity (I mean, the whole white wedding thing), but white also symbolizes cleansing, peace, balance, truth, forgiveness, and acceptance.

Everyday Uses: Use a white diffuser when doing a cleanse of your space, try out a white yoga mat for balance, buy white Lillies, light white candles, keep a clear quartz crystal on your office desk, or wear white PJs to go to bed feeling at peace.

White Crystals: Selenite, clear quartz, white howlite, moonstone

Read Me: The Best Crystal for Your Zodiac Sign

Red — Passion, Courage, Luck, and Hospitality

red

Symbolizes: Passion, courage, good luck, and hospitality

It’s no surprise that red is associated with passion and anger (the term “seeing red”). But red symbolizes not just passion, but strength, inspiration, courage, and ambition. Red wants us to take action and follow our hearts. Red is also associated with the root chakra.

Everyday Uses: Buy red workout shoes to pump up your workout, wear a red blouse when going to an important event or red heels to a date, wear red lipstick for a confidence boost on a date, or paint your door red to welcome house guests.

Red Crystals: Garnet, red jasper

Orange — Sensuality, Creativity, Pride, and Prosperity

orange

Symbolizes: Sensuality, creativity, pride, and prosperity

Orange isn’t just for fall and pumpkin spice lattes. Associated with the sacral chakra (located at the center of your lower belly), orange symbolizes sensuality and creativity. It’s also known to bring out kindness, intellect, pride, uplifting energies, prosperity, and kinship.

Everyday Uses: Use orange ink and notebooks when working on creative projects, bring orange roses to someone you’re proud of, or drop an orange bath bomb into your bath after a stressful day to get some uplifting energies.

Orange Crystals: Tiger’s eye

Yellow — Happiness, Self-esteem, and Friendliness

yellow

Symbolizes: Happiness, self-esteem, and friendliness

Bright and loud, it’s no wonder that yellow is associated with happiness and joy. Along with being raising beauty, confidence, and self-esteem, yellow also increases memory and learning. Yellow is associated with the solar plexus chakra (above your navel) and is the source of personal power.

Everyday Uses: Use a yellow highlighter while studying, post a pic of you wearing yellow on your dating app profile, keep lemons around the kitchen, drive a yellow car, wear a yellow jumpsuit when you need a confidence boost, yellow rain boots make any rainy day brighter, or set up some sunflowers in your house.

Yellow Crystals: Citrine, calcite

Green — Money, Prosperity, and Luck

green

Symbolizes: Money, prosperity, and luck

Money is green for a reason. The color green symbolizes prosperity, money, abundance, luck, and growth. Green is also associated with heart chakra which manifests feelings of hope, intuition, and rebirth.

Everyday uses: Paint your nails green so everything you touch turns to money, carry a green wallet so you always have an increase in cash flow, use green gardening tools to promote growth, place a “money tree” in your house.

Green Crystals: Jade

Read Me: The Best Houseplant for Your Zodiac Sign

Blue — Harmony, Healing, Communication, and Wisdom

blue

Symbolizes: Harmony, healing, communication, and wisdom

“Feeling blue” is a term used to describe feeling sad, but blue in color magic couldn’t be the further thing from sorrow. Blue actually symbolizes harmony, healing, creativity, focus, and patience. Associated with the throat chakra, blue can increase communication, wisdom, and forgiveness.

Everyday Uses: Hang pictures of blue things in your office to increase focus and creativity, drink from a blue mug in the morning to keep you calm, paint your room blue to promote harmony, or wear blue necklace for great communication (preferable with one of the crystals mentioned below for an extra magical boost).

Blue Crystals: Blue agate, lapis lazuli, turquoise

Purple —Wisdom, Power, and Health

purple

Symbolizes: Wisdom, power, and health

Often associated with royalty and wealth in some cultures, the color purple has intense levels of magical property. Purple in all shades symbolizes wisdom, power, health, and prophecy. Indigo represents the third eye chakra while violet represents the crown chakra, both trying to connect you with a higher power.

Everyday Uses: Wear purple lipstick when you want your words to hold power, dye your hair when you want powerful presence, color things or write letters in purple ink.

Purple Crystals: Amethyst

Pink — Self-love, Intimacy, Compassion, and New Beginnings

pink

Symbolizes: Self-love, intimacy, compassion, and new beginnings

Pink is often associated with feminine and “just for girls,” but this color is so much more than that. Pink symbolizes love, compassion, friendship, intimacy, self-love, and new beginnings—not to mention a lot of romance.

Everyday Uses: Wear a pink shirt or dress on a first date (trust us), or wear a cute pink bra under your outfit (even if no one is seeing it but you). Get matching rose quartz friendship bracelets or necklaces with your bestie. Add a pink couch to your living room, sprinkle some Himalayan salt on your food, use pink paperclips to hold together contracts (new beginnings/friendships).

Everything You Need to Know About Reading Tea Leaves

Everything You Need to Know About Reading Tea Leaves

By Ellen Ricks

In Magic, Spirit

Your Sign's Biggest Weakness (and How to Fix It!)

Your Sign’s Biggest Weakness (and How to Fix It!)

Your Sign's Biggest Weakness (and How to Fix It!)

Click for a complimentary psychic reading.

You already know your sign’s strengths. But along with the good can come some annoying, tricky, and troubling habits and behaviors. Here, your sign’s number one weakness, and how to fix it (if you wanna—no judgment).

Aries

Aries’ Biggest Vice: One-click shopping. No sooner than you hear about something on TV or from a friend, it’s in your cart and at your door. The result: You have way too much stuff!

How to Fix It: Hold back. You know that old put your credit card in water in the freezer trick? Try it. We know, we know, your card info is saved on your favorite websites and it takes two seconds to defrost the ice under hot water, but the act will remind you: Taking your time can pay off.

Taurus
Taurus’ Biggest Vice: Stubbornness. Even when everyone, including Google,  proves you wrong, you’ll hold onto your version of the “truth.”

How to Fix It: Say it with us: I hear you. You don’t need to agree, but some arguments (like chocolate versus vanilla ice cream) will just never be solved. Play the peacemaker and try to stop proving everyone else wrong for once!

Gemini
Gemini’s Biggest Vice: One more round, please! Life of the party Geminis love to keep the party going into the wee hours … which seems like an awesome idea until tomorrow morning’s alarm sounds.

How to Fix It:  Switch to selzter for a round or two. You’ll be surprised at how you can still be the life of the party—even when you’re not indulging.

Cancer
Cancer’s Biggest Vice: Who you, a hermit? Cozy comforters, oversize sweaters, and throw pillows galore—Cancers are all about the Nordic art of hygge, and can often be found snuggling deep under the overs even on a steamy weekend night in July.

How to Fix It: Try sleeping al fresco—or at least with the windows open. Cancers are all about cuddling into themselves, but connecting to the outside world—including the very physical feeling of sensing the wind on your skin—can only make you feel more in tune with the larger world around you. And nothing is cozier than that.

Leo
Leo’s Biggest Vice: Labels? Yes, please. Luxury-loving Lions love the thrill of the hunt, a little too much. They can’t resist the newest, the latest, and the most luxe—and love flaunting their finds.

How to Fix It: Try before you buy. Enjoy trying things on at your favorite shops, but don’t pull out the plastic yet. Instead, make eBay and TheRealReal your friends—so you can buy the looks you love for a lot less money.

Virgo
Virgo’s Biggest Vice: Monotony. Virgo, let’s talk about that white t-shirt collection, or the line of denim shirts in your closet. When you love a look, you buy it in bulk.

How to Fix It: Try a trend! A pair of red power heels from Badgley Mischka, a silver metallic sweater from Catherine Malandrino, or a buffalo plaid boyfriend shirt will all look great with the basics you’ve already (over)stocked.

Libra
Libra’s Biggest Vice: The eyes are a window to your soul, and you’re obsessed with making sure your peepers are perfect. You are likely to own more tweezers than shoes, and you get anxious if you don’t have a spare pair in your bag; plus, you’ve never met a mascara you didn’t like.

How to Fix It: Go natural! Trying a skincare regimen like Glossier’s Phase 1 isn’t exactly the same as going makeup-free, but your peepers will finally get a chance to show their true colors—and you won’t believe how many compliments you’ll get!

Scorpio
Scorpio’s Biggest Vice: Moody purples, intense reds—you’ve never met a deep, dark shade you didn’t like, which sometimes makes your space feel a little claustrophobic.

How to Fix It: A Tocca candle, in a breezy, beachy scent, gives you that candlelit look you love—and offsets the moodiness of your interior decor.

Sagittarius
Sagittarius’ Biggest Vice: Archers, it’s in the bag, literally. Adventurous Sags are always planning getaways, and purchasing different purses, backpacks, overnight cases, and suitcases to ensure they can carry all their stuff. The only issue? You never know where you’ve put anything!

How to Fix It: Go oversize: A Rebecca Minkoff satchel in a statement color from TheRealReal.com will hold everything, so you don’t need to divvy up (and misplace) your belongings.

Capricorn
Capricorn’s Biggest Vice: Sale? Better stock up. Practical Caps often buy in bulk, and always have plenty of toothpaste, cereal, paper goods, and dry goods on hand. But when was the last time you actually bought something fun? We thought so.

How to Fix It: Go to a store you love, touch everything, and buy one thing at full price—for yourself. We promise that it won’t lead to a shopping habit, but will help you learn how to treat yourself when the time is right.

Aquarius
Aquarius’ Biggest Vice: Aquarians can be flaky, all about doing whatever suits their needs at that moment. And planning more than a few days ahead? No way!

How to Fix It: Commit to a calendar. Whether it’s on paper or your iCal, writing your plans down will subconsciously help you keep the date. Also: No more maybes. When you get an invite, say yes or no.

Pisces
Pisces’ Biggest Vice: Sensitive and empathetic, you sometimes get a thrill from other people’s drama—even when it drives you nuts. You’re so affected by moods that sometimes you play God, pitting people against each other inadvertently as you probe into their issues.

How to Fix It: Hello, Netflix. Getting up to date on an emotionally meaty drama like The Americans satisfies your need for drama without you getting too invested.

Your Weekly Horoscope for September 4-10: The Pisces Full Moon Brings Closer Connections

Get a map to your future, with a free psychic reading.

Interactive Mercury goes direct on September 5. Smooth sailing, right? Yes … and no. While some things will settle down (and you likely won’t find emails going missing or technology breaking) a Pisces full moon on the sixth stirs up emotions, leaving all signs feeling vulnerable and potentially second-guessing their past decisions. Psychic Pisces also cranks up our intuitive powers, making us feel the next steps we need to take. In short, you’re doing a lot of mental and emotional groundwork this week as you pave the path to a life you want. The weekend feels more stable and secure, giving you time to take stock of what you’ve got. Reconnect with good friends and family, and know that even though this Virgo season may throw challenges your way, you’ve got this.

Aries Weekly Horoscope
Feeling impatient, Rams? While you’re eager to go go go and get started on an idea or project, the stars suggest taking a step back, taking a deep breath, and making sure you’ve got details squared away before moving forward. The Pisces full moon on September 6 can stir up emotions, which may make it harder to figure out what you need to do. Talk, listen, and gather information, but don’t make any major decisions yet. And be careful what you promise: Outside factors may make those promises impossible to fulfill, so go noncommital if at all possible. By the weekend, you’ll be feeling more in control and sure of yourself, and come Monday, there will be no stopping you!

Taurus Weekly Horoscope
Hardworking Bulls need some rest and relaxation, too! That’s absolutely the case for this week. Say yes to social invites, and relax on the planning. Cool prospects and events will come to you, but only if you have the flexibility to be able to go with the flow. Nostalgic Pisces may bring back someone from your past around Wednesday’s full moon, and they may have a lesson to teach you. Listen to what they say, but more important is to tune in to how you feel. You may also feel like your emotions are on a rollercoaster—spending time solo this weekend may be exactly what you need to feel a bit more sure footed for the month going forward.

Is love in your stars?

Gemini Weekly Horoscope
You’ve been out and about a ton this summer, and this week, you’re suddenly feeling like you want your house to feel even more homey. With that in mind, you may be embarking on a big DIY project, or even contemplating a move or change. This week, it’s the little things that make a huge difference, and you may find that taking care of your home life manifests in feeling more confident out in the world at large. It’s also time to face a long-simmering issue with a loved one. It’s been under the surface for most of the summer, and talking it out now, even if it’s uncomfortable, is exactly what you need to do to move forward.

Cancer Weekly Horoscope
As lively Mercury turns direct, Crabs are making their voices heard. Whether it’s going after a promotion at work, initiating a flirtfest on an app, or bringing up a big-deal issue with a loved one, this week is the time to say what you want. Because it’s guided by your ruling planet, the full moon on Wednesday affects you deeply, and you may find yourself feeling ultra-emotional, or even weepy. This isn’t a bad thing! But instead of retreating into your shell, Crabs, try letting someone in. Sharing your vulnerabilities is a big step for you, but it’s one you need to take for growth and change.

Leo June Weekly Horoscope
Your money sector is being scrutinized by the stars this week, and luxury-loving Lions may be feeling the pinch in their wallets. Relax! The best way to approach any money issue is to simply switch your thinking about your cash flow. Instead of looking at what you lack, look at what you have. Feel like you deserve a big material gift (which, after the summer you’ve been through, is totally understandable). Go for it, but focus on the way the item makes you feel, just as much as the price tag. Does it make you feel relaxed, happy, grateful? It may be a smart splurge. But if it makes you feel nervous or anxious, skip it. Learning to tune into your emotions is a key lesson this week, Lions. Learn it!

Virgo Weekly Horoscope
It’s Virgo season, and you’re in your element. Ideas are following, friendships are seamless, and your relationship (and sex life) couldn’t be better. So what’s missing? Your free will! While the universe has granted you a lovely week, it’s up to you to make sure you’re actively doing what you want—otherwise, going with the flow makes it all too easy to coast. In other words, frequent gut check-ins can help you suss out whether you’re truly in your life, or are just going along with things because it’s easier than speaking up. The universe is teaching you that gold star weeks like this can be yours all the time, but it’s up to you to manifest them.

Libra Weekly Horoscope
Breathe. Libras, you’ve been burning the candle at both ends, and for what? Sometimes, it may seem like a well-lived life is a busy life, but that’s simply not the case. As the planets move to a more secluded and spiritual section of your chart, this is a good week to bow out of unnecessary social engagements and tune into yourself. It’s also a great time to get out in nature. Walking around with the earth beneath your feet can help keep you grounded. And while it may seem like everything in your life is awesome, this is a week where a little honesty goes a long way. There’s something in your relationship—or a newish relationship—that hasn’t felt quite comfortable. Now’s the time to figure out what you need to make it right. You’ve got this.

Scorpio Weekly Horoscope
Oof. Mixed messages abound, causing Scorpios to second guess their past conversations. The best course of action: Don’t talk behind people’s backs (or over email) and nip a confusing conversation in the bud. You’re also meeting a lot of new people, which may present a lot of potential opportunities, both professionally and personally. You can be exceptionally friendly when you want to be, which is awesome, but don’t make any false promises or commit to things you can’t do. Better to be polite but restrained, and allow a friendship or relationship to naturally flourish.

Tired of being alone? See what’s in the cards with a free tarot Love Reading.

Sagittarius Weekly Horoscope
Archers are in the spotlight this week, as the stars move into your sector of goals and career. Now’s a great chance to make a move at work, but be savvy: Walk into any interview knowing what you want, and don’t sign any papers until you’ve read the fine print. Fluctuating influences at the beginning of the week may cause misunderstandings; remember that it’s fine to ask for clarification rather than assuming you’re both on the same page. Finally, you’ve been holding back in a relationship: Sharing more of your personality, even the parts that make you feel vulnerable, will only bring you closer this week, especially under the influence of Wednesday’s Pisces full moon.

Capricorn Weekly Horoscope
Practical Caps have made major inroads on their goals this summer, but how much fun have you had? The stars say now is the time to book a vacation—potentially with your partner or someone you’ve just begun seeing. Feisty Mars moves into your sector of exploration early in the week, and getting away (even for a day!) can get you out of the funk you’ve been in for the past few weeks. Different surroundings can give you the perspective you need, especially as it relates to a certain issue or concern that’s been bothering you. The Pisces full moon midweek brings up emotions—while you tend to push them away in favor of what’s going on around you, it’s wise to take the time to unpack them and talk them through—you may not realize just how much past emotions have been holding you back until you do.

Aquarius Weekly Horoscope
Aquarians are majorly introspective this week. The good news: The Pisces full moon on Wednesday helps clarify what it is that you really want. And while you’re tempted to hibernate, turn down invitations, and hunker down with yourself, socializing can be a great thing this week. Not only does it help you get out of your head, but the more people you speak with and the more connections you make, the more easily next steps will manifest themselves, making it possible to truly make your dreams a reality. It may seem “nothing” is happening when you head out with friends, but trust that everything is happening below the surface in terms of the universe steering you toward your goals.

Pisces Weekly Horoscope
The Pisces full moon on Wednesday is bringing up all sorts of things for you, Fish. You may feel emotionally out of your comfort zone, but remember that discomfort can lead to growth. The key is to feel the feelings. Ruminating can make things feel overwhelming; enlisting the help of a trusted friend (or life coach) can help you make sense of all those swirling emotions and transform them into action. Feisty Mars moves into your sector of relating this week, so some interactions may feel stormy. Again, keep the focus on you and your feelings, and even a fight can help you grow.

How to Avoid a Hangover? Try Conscious Drinking.

How to Avoid a Hangover? Try Conscious Drinking.

By Ruby Warrington

On August 29, 2017

In Drinks, Eclipse, Spirit

How to Avoid a Hangover? Try Conscious Drinking.

Whew, eclipse season! Plus, Mercury in retrograde! For me, this August has been a TRIP, and the backdrop to a profound shift in one particular area of my life: my relationship to alcohol. I’ve written a lot about my “sober curious” journey, which has seen me go from committed habitual drinker (some may use the term “alcoholic,” I have never identified with that label) to drinking a handful of times a year. And not in a “counting down the days until my next blowout” kind of a way. Rather, over the past seven years, I have gradually reduced the amount I drink to almost nothing. And my desire to drink has shrunk along with my consumption. In fact, wine that used to taste like nectar to me, now tastes like just another drink. And even when I think I’d like a glass, I usually change my mind again, mid-glass.

Not that alcohol, in moderation, is “bad,” but it is a powerful substance, and taking some time to tap into your relationship with it can be key for both tuning into yourself and, believe it or not, having more fun.

The latest research shows that drinking—regular old drinking as well as high-risk drinking—is up across the board in the United States. Why? Drinking to excess has become more and more acceptable, especially for women, and I believe it’s also a reaction to the rapid pace of change in the world. As the future becomes less and less certain, the numbing comfort of a cocktail (not to mention the short-lived illusion of joy this provides) looks more and more appealing.

My sober curious path has involved confronting, and ultimately accepting, many of the more painful and less fabulous aspects of my life. But there has been one place where alcohol remained a trusty companion: on the dance floor. Like many of us, my extreme self-consciousness about dancing means I’ve held onto booze as a crutch at weddings, parties, and anywhere else there may be booty-shaking on the menu. The only place I’ve been able to dance without a cocktail in my system in my own living room (when only my cat is watching).

But everything changed on the August 7 Aquarius full moon eclipse, which I celebrated by hosting a sober dance party as part of my Club SÖDA NYC event series. Taking over the rooftop bar of a hotel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, we had dancefloor reiki and tarot readings, and I made Unicorn Shots (almond milk, cacao, kava, banana, maca and honey, with rainbow sprinkles on top!) To my surprise, two hours into the proceedings, I found myself dancing like a banshee—and completely alcohol-free. The euphoria in my body was palpable, in a way it never has been while drunk dancing—and it lingered for hours after the music had stopped.

It was the most liberating experience I’ve had in a long time. And with the timing of the lunar eclipse, it felt as if a cosmic switch had been flicked: The seven years I’d spent slowly but steadily teaching my mind, body, and soul that I don’t need alcohol had finally brought me to this light-filled moment. After all, full moon eclipses often prompt sudden “endings” in life, helping us to shed limiting beliefs that have overstayed their welcome.

The deal was sealed two weeks later, at the corresponding Leo new moon eclipse, when I found myself leading a sober new moon ceremony with my new friend Shaman Durek on Obonjan Island in Croatia. Following a guided self-love meditation, Durek chanted and sang a series of tribal songs over a pumping deep house soundtrack, and the crowd went WILD.

We danced for hours with the wind in our hair, earth below our feet, water all around, and fire in our hearts. The vibe was electric, and countless people came to tell me how amazing it was that we were all sober! It was so perfect that the new moon eclipse was in Leo—the sign of pure, childlike creativity and self-expression. Dancing that night, I was reminded of how, at the age of three, I’d told my mom: “Ruby is truly a dancer!” And mini me certainly didn’t need a shot of tequila (or three) to know it.

Having been reminded that I can dance like only my cat is watching without alcohol, I don’t know when I’ll drink again. Like I said, I don’t identify with the label “alcoholic,” and I’m essentially an advocate of conscious drinking—what I define as questioning the alcohol you do decide to imbibe.

Want to try conscious drinking for yourself? Here’s how to start:

Instead of automatically pouring a glass of wine at the end of a long day, or grabbing a glass a party hostess offers, or giving the server your order the second you step into happy hour, consider stalling with a water while you ask yourself these questions:

Why am I drinking this?

How will it make me feel, in five minutes, in five hours, and tomorrow morning?

Am I drinking for me, or somebody else?

Answering these honestly may mean making very different choices. Sometimes, you may be making the choice to drink because you’re celebrating, or because there’s a wine or cocktail on the menu that’s one of your favorites. But other times, you’re making the choice because you’re stressed, exhausted, or imbibing some liquid courage because you feel insecure. Knowing why you’re drinking can help you suss out whether or not you should be drinking. And “should” is subjective—only you know the answer. Another way to get a holistic view of the role alcohol plays in your life: Make a pros/cons list. Pros could be the socialization factor or the taste, and cons could be feeling sluggish the next morning, or regretting the 30 dollars gone from your wallet. The pros/cons could change every few months, or years, so doing a list whenever you wonder how alcohol plays a part in your life is key.

Another “conscious drinking” technique: Skip alcohol during an event where you’d usually have a cocktail or two. My own journey has shown me that with dedication and integrity, it’s possible for even the most committed cocktail girl to unlearn deeply ingrained beliefs about booze. The first step? Don’t drink! It sounds so simple, but we all know how hard it can be to say “no thanks” when the social pressure is on. But you’ll likely be surprised at how little people care what’s in your glass. If you want, order a seltzer with lime, and let people think you’re holding a vodka soda. Going sober curious will mean a lot of sober “firsts” (first sober party, date, wedding, etc.), and the only way to move beyond them is to just dive in. Discovering that you can have just as much fun without a drink in your hand (trust me, you absolutely will!) is an empowering revelation in and of itself.

Want more “sober curious” tips? I’m in London, hosting an event called High Sobriety: How To Have a Fabulous Sober (Curious) Life on September 7—and I’ll also be posting the discussion on my Instagram, @the_numinous. Your journey to the ultimate high vibe life could very well start here.
