How to Attract Love and Abundance with a Good Luck Talisman

According to my friend Luke Simon, an astrologer and energy worker, it was realizing he needed some juju to wear on his body that brought him to the world of crystals and crystal healing. Having recently moved to NYC from his hometown of Santa Fe, the intense atmosphere of the city that never sleeps often left him feeling drained and confused, as his own energy mingled with the chaos of the city streets.

To help protect his energy reserves, he invested in protective black tourmaline and quartz crystals, worn in a little leather pouch around his neck. They weren’t jewelry; they were talismans.

In the dictionary, a talisman is defined as: “An object, typically an inscribed ring or stone, that is thought to have magic powers and to bring good luck.” And couldn’t we all use a little bit of that? Common examples of talismans from everyday life might be a classic diamond engagement ring, or a friendship necklace or bracelet. In both cases, a simple piece of jewelry takes on additional meaning, and is thought to safeguard the relationship it symbolizes in some way.

But a talisman can be any object that holds a deeper meaning for us. Even our phones! After all, our smartphones are shiny objects we keep on or about our person at all times and often decorate to make more beautiful. They’re where we store photos of the people we love and the apps that help connect us. As for offering protection? I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels less “safe” if I accidentally leave the house without my phone!

I even know one woman who would get a regular manicure with lucky symbols painted on each nail, like a hamsa, or an evil eye. Every time my friend looked down at her hands, she was activating the talisman’s true purpose—which is to serve as a reminder of a positive intention. For her, it was:  I’m okay, the Universe has got my back.

Here’s how to find and activate your talisman:

Get your rocks on.
Yes, some stones are said to offer more protection than others (like Luke’s black tourmaline, for example), but the best way to choose a specific crystal as your talisman is to be open to whichever stone just “speaks” to you. Even better, there’s some pretty fab and protective crystal jewelry around these days.

Raid the family jewels.
Ask your mom or grandma if there’s a special piece of jewelry somewhere in your family history that you could inherit (read: breathe new life into and start wearing, stat). Ask about the person it originally belonged to, and use it as a way to connect to the energy of your ancestors.

Work your wallpaper.
I recently updated the background image on my iPhone home screen to an image of the Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu deity who rules abundance. Lakshmi reminds us that we can only get as much as we give, and that the flow of abundance relies on this cosmic code—as I am reminded every time I look at my phone.

Pick a card, any card.
A tarot or other kind of oracle card can also become a talisman if you choose to work with it more deeply. Pick a card at random or select one that resonates strongly with you, and then find ways to incorporate it into your life. Maybe you make a special place for it in your wallet, or keep it somewhere you can see on your desk and allow it to trigger positive intentions every time you look at it.

No matter what you choose to be your talisman, I have not doubt that it bring you health, wealth, and abundant love.

For a Tattoo You’ll Never Regret, Tap Your Zodiac Sign!

For a Tattoo You’ll Never Regret, Tap Your Zodiac Sign!

For a Tattoo You’ll Never Regret, Tap Your Zodiac Sign!

Summer in my local ‘hood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is officially tats-out season. As the mercury rises and jeans and long sleeves make way for tanks and micro shorts, my streets become a walking, talking gallery of ink.

If it used to be considered rebellious to get a tattoo, in 2017, the fact that I’ve personally yet to go under the needle (that kind of needle, anyway—me and Botox are a whole different story!) feels positively anti-establishment!

I considered it for a while there, back when I was 18 or so. White tattoos, which would only show up on my Caucasian skin when I had a tan, were a “thing,” and I liked the idea of a design that would only be visible half the time.

After a few weeks of research, I decided on an ornate crayfish design to wrap around my ankle—and thank Goddess I talked myself out of that one! Having a small mollusk inked on my body for life may have been befitting of my Cancer moon sign, but wouldn’t exactly fit with my current look. And for now, at least, I’m happy to be ink-free. But if I’m ever again tempted to get tattooed, I’ll know where to turn for ink-spiration: my sign, of course!

The signs of the zodiac are grouped into three different categories: Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. And when it comes to making big decisions and implementing change in our lives (yes, getting a tat totally counts), knowing which group our sign falls into can help us make a choice we’ll love now—and always.

The Zodiac’s Guide to Picking the Perfect Tattoo:

Note: As always, in matters related to personal appearance, read for your rising sign, too!

CARDINAL SIGNS:
Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn
Qualities: Trend-setting, change-making, entrepreneurial; you grow through projecting your feelings, thoughts, and ideas into the world; and you use your will to make things happen.

Tattoo tactics: The urge to get inked may be linked to a big life change, as a way of marking the transition from what has been to all that could be. If this is the case, then consider what you truly want to bring with you into your new incarnation—and what you’re ready to leave behind. Is there also a way to incorporate an intention—a goal or a wish—for your future into the design?

Cardinal signs are inspired by text tattoos.

* * *

FIXED SIGNS: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius
Qualities: Comfort-loving, determined and resolute; you seek consistency, security and order.

Tattoo tactics: For you, a new tattoo could be a way to imprint a cherished memory or state of being onto your body forever. Tats can be a source of comfort for you, a reminder that some things in life are indeed permanent, even when the outside world appears to be in a constant state of flux. Choose a design that triggers this sense of stability and reminds you that your body is your “home,” no matter where you are in the world.
Love the ocean? A fixed sign’s happy place makes great inkspo.

* * *

MUTABLE SIGNS: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces
Qualities: Accepting and adaptive to external changes; you move quickly from one thing to the next and happily play the chameleon.

Tattoo tactics: Two words: impulse control. You are likely to be talked into getting a tat because all your friends are doing it—and if you’re not careful, you may find yourself paying a fortune to have it removed a few years down the line. Give yourself at least two weeks to think things over before you commit, and take extra time to find a design that truly speaks to you, perhaps drawing your own symbol, speaking with a respected artist, or drawing upon your zodiac sign’s traits instead of just choosing the first thing you see in a flash book.

Birthflowers, like this May lily, are wise choices for mutable signs.

Know Your Period, Know Your Power

Know Your Period, Know Your Power

By Ruby Warrington

Know Your Period, Know Your Power

Embodying the cyclical nature of all life, Now Age thinking is that women’s menstrual cycles are designed by nature to guide us to our most creative, sexual, nurturing, and knowing selves every month. And when we actually bleed, this is symbolic of us being “reborn.”

One of my favorite writers on the subject of women and cycles is another British witch, Lisa Lister, who believes that some of our greatest spiritual work as women lies in realigning ourselves with the rhythm and rhyme of our Moon time. “Getting to know your cycle is like a master key to your monthly superpowers,” she told me recently. I had waited three days for her email, since when I first reached out she was on day one of her cycle and had just begun to bleed. “Retreating from the outside world on day one is sacred and a total nonnegotiable for me. I have said no to TV appearances because I was on day one,” she explained.

According to Lisa’s research (which became her life’s work after she was diagnosed with endometriosis at age 25 and told she needed a hysterectomy), the four distinct phases of our cycles—Menstruation, Preovulation, Ovulation, Premenstruation—can be mapped and therefore utilized to guide us to our most powerful selves. The issue is that what Lisa terms the “dude-centric” systems we live by don’t allow for these fluctuations. Week in, week out, we’re expected to show up in the world and perform in the same way. When the expectations of society go against where we’re at in our cycle, frustration—along with major chocolate cravings—can set in.

“But if we actually listened to our bodies … we’d unlock some extremely powerful ways to access our inner wild woman—intuition, rage, truth, alchemy—and that’s where the real MAGIC happens,” Lisa goes on. Magic, just maybe, like listening to your highest self and allowing it to guide you toward your most magnificent and significant life purpose.

All of which I got pretty darned excited about when I was first introduced to Lisa’s work. The idea that once you come to know your cycle intimately, you can begin to plan your life around it, seemed like a fabulous way to capitalize on the energy and gifts of each different phase. This is easier if you’re in a position to make your own schedule, granted. But if you do have the kind of job where you have to show up to a cubicle at the same time every day, you can at least go easy on yourself if you “underperform” because a big pitch happens to fall on a day of your cycle better suited to quiet introspection.

But wait a minute: What if you have an irregular cycle, like me? Which Lisa also thinks is very common, BTW, if not exactly “normal.” Her theory? “It’s another symptom of working against our cyclic nature and trying to live in a linear, dude-centric way.” Considering my whole career has meant being creative on demand to hit weekly if not daily deadlines, regardless of what my inner compass is telling me, it’s not exactly a huge leap to see how this alone could affect my flow. Many, many of our flows.

Lisa’s advice to me as I continue to work on finding mine? Keep diligently mapping my cycle: like, literally take daily notes on everything from my mood and energy levels to how I’m feeling about my appearance, until I begin to understand where my unique phases begin and end. This is something I encourage you to try, too, whether it means making daily notes in your diary or on your phone, or downloading an app (I’ve started using one called Luna) to keep track of where you’re at.

“The more you chart, the more your cycle will start to find her groove, since generally she’ll be ‘irregular’ because you’re not paying attention and are working against her, opposed to with her natural rhythm,” Lisa told me, adding that the length of each phase will be somewhat different for everyone.

In my case: “You may notice that your preovulation is super long because your body needs it to be that way so that you can get more done. This is how freakin’ incredible it is!” When it comes to what I’ve been learning about periods in general, freakin’ incredible sounds about right.

The Secret Powers of Your Moon Cycle Phases:

This guideline is based on a 28-day cycle and may be slightly different for you, if your cycle is longer or shorter.

Menstruation (days 1–6)
It’s all about: deep intuition, retreat, and forgiveness—a reconnection to your inner truth.

Preovulation (days 7–13)
It’s all about: high energy, risk taking, and expansive vision—getting shit done.

Ovulation (days 14–21)
It’s all about: wanting to be seen. You’re sexy, social, “The queen of freaking everything!”

Premenstruation (days 22–28)
It’s all about: a shift from “doing” to “being.” You’re letting it all hang out, and there’s no time for BS.

Use Your Zodiac Sign to Pick Your Perfect Bathing Suit!

Use Your Zodiac Sign to Pick Your Perfect Bathing Suit!

Are you feeling the heat? Whether I have actual beach time on my calendar or not, something about the month of July always gets me fantasizing about days spent drinking watermelon juice, reading a good novel with my toes in the ocean. Which mainly manifests as me trawling the Internet for a new bathing suit. Once upon a time, the mere prospect of swimsuit shopping—online or off—gave me a headache.

But as I’ve grown to understand the power of my sign to guide my big and little life choices, I’ve come to discover that the zodiac holds the key to helping me choose the beach look I love—one that makes me feel amazing in my body. You could also say choosing a bathing suit you feel good in is a form of self love and self care.  After all, I think it serves us well to get comfortable with the body we’re in, and choosing a bathing suit we love is just one way to do that.

Read on to discover the perfect swimwear style for your sign.

And remember, it’s always worth reading for your rising sign too—since this rules how we present ourselves to the world!

Aries
Minimalist “no-fills” looks suit your slightly tomboyish style, and you’ll dig a sporty-yet-glam look like this one from Melissa Odabash. “Baywatch red” is always a good color for Aries babes.

Sizzle on the sand this summer in a sporty, curve hugging number. Bari Racerback in Red, Melissa Odabash, $252

Taurus
Your sensual sign loves to flaunt what your mama gave you. Think Marilyn Monroe in full 1950s bombshell mode, and check out vintage styles this season. A high-waisted bottom and cleavage-enhancing top will put you directly in touch with your inner siren.

Flirty and feminine, Bulls will love the retro vibe of AShopZ’s retro bikini set, $19 on Amazon.

Gemini
You’re all about having some fun in the sun, and the current slogan swimsuit trend was made for you, Gemini! Say, “Yes way, rosé,” or whatever your mantra of the month may be! I love the winky ones from Crowned Queen.

Make a statement without saying a word in a Crowned Queen “Aloha Beaches” suit, $49.

Cancer
Summer days wafting about in caftans are perfect for comfort-loving Cancer. Is there an easier way to get dressed and still feel like a total Goddess? I love the floaty ones from Calypso St. Barth.

A look that effortlessly goes from beach to after hours. Soleil Lili Tunic, Calypso St. Barth, $50.

Leo
Every day requires wardrobe, right Leo? You’re all about an outfit that projects an Image to the world, whether you’re in full professional mode or out on the sand. The new collection from designer Lisa Marie Fernandez is one I love, and puts the swimming into costume.

These dots will look especially darling in Instas. Lisa Marie Fernandez Sabine Polka Dot Maillot, $450.

Similar: Eternatastic Women’s Retro Polka Dot Tankini, $20 on Amazon.

Virgo
Form and function are of equal importance to you, Virgo, and the less fuss and frill, the better! The chic simplicity of preppy label Solid & Striped will appeal to your less-is-more mindset. Think stripes, solids, and a clean, crisp look that fits in on any beach or pool deck.

Stripes are always in style. Elle Bikini, Solid & Striped, from $61 on Amazon.

Libra
Your life is your art, Libra, and your beach retreat is no exception! As the curator of the zodiac, you’ll adore the collectable prints and chic shapes of Mara Hoffman’s Summer 2017 swim collection. Choose a suit that makes a style statement and hugs your curves.

Who said one pieces were basic? Mara Hoffman knot front scoop neck one piece, from $98 on Amazon.

Scorpio
Sexy and sophisticated, check and check! You want your beach look to be as elegant and mysterious as you, Scorpio. I love the looks, including off-the-shoulder ruffles, at Midsommer Swim; mixing and matching tops and bottoms can create a signature look that will serve you all season long.

Off the shoulder gets seriously sexy. Tops and bottoms from $85.

Similar: JIANLANPTT off-the-shoulder swimsuit,  from $14 on Amazon.

Sagittarius
A woman of the world, your beach look is Boho gypsy meets Amazonian adventurer. You’ll dig the colorful, hand-crafted styles from Turkish-born “world citizen” Ipek Irgit and her label Kiini. Prints and patterns are awesome, and don’t be afraid to mix and match to suit (pun intended) your mood!

Play with patterns and structure! Tasmin Mono Maillot, $305.

Similar: EA Selection Backless Bandage Bikini, from from $20 on Amazon.

Capricorn
Cap has a rep for being the most “sensible” sign of the zodiac—but this doesn’t have to mean stuffy. Structural styles can form the foundations of a super sexy beach look, like any from the designer Lonely, who I love.

Black and white is anything but simple and everything about style. Dita Swim Suit in Black and White ZigZag, Lonely, $193.

Similar: Cocoship High-Waisted Bikini, from $27 on Amazon.

Pisces adore the water—and love a look that’s memorable on and off the beach. Phoenix Marilyn Swimsuit, $175, Mona Swims.

Similar: Hibelle Women’s Sheer Beach Coverup, from $20 on Amazon.

Can Cleaning Your Closet Really Cleanse Your Soul?

Can Cleaning Your Closet Really Cleanse Your Soul?

Can Cleaning Your Closet Really Cleanse Your Soul?

A year or so after I launched my cosmic lifestyle site, The Numinous, I decided it was time for a psychic closet clear-out. This was way before Marie Kondo introduced us all to The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, and decluttering was not yet in vogue. My urge to tidy up was simply driven by the fact that every time I opened my wardrobe, I felt like I was a stranger in my own life.

I had recently moved to New York City, leaving behind my full-time job at one of the UK’s top fashion magazines. Working for myself now meant a lot less “dressing the part” (you’ve all seen The Devil Wears Prada, right?)—and a lot more spending whole days slouching about in my track pants, while working on my passion project from a desk in the corner of my shoebox apartment in the East Village.

The move stateside had inspired all kinds of Carrie Bradshaw fantasies in me. And while there were definitely late nights on my laptop pondering the meaning of life (but in my new line of work, like, the actual meaning of life)—opportunities to rock a killer pair of Miu Mius while schmoozing editors at Vogue had become few and far between.

Cut to last year’s wardrobe crisis: The chasm between my hotshot fashionista life and my new life as a fledgling entrepreneur had manifested in one long “I’ve got literally nothing to wear” moment.

It’s a phenomenon any woman navigating a big transition in her life will no doubt be familiar with. Whether it’s changing jobs, moving cities, having a baby, or embarking on a round-the-world trip—any time there’s a major shift in our circumstances, it shows up in how we get dressed. And feeling like we have nothing to wear can be depressing, depleting, and can seriously disruptive to the flow of our energy.

But it turns out that solving my existential wardrobe crisis wasn’t as easy as simply shipping all my old outfits off to my local Buffalo Exchange. So much of my identity was stitched into those babies—not to mention my ambitions as a writer. Was I really ready to close the door on the old “dream job” I’d worked so hard for, and step fully into an unknown, PJ-clad future?

According to my friend Betsy LeFae, the answer was a resounding YES! If anything, clinging to my old clothes would actually prevent the flow of energy in my new project, as well as in the new relationships and identity I was building in New York.

But this didn’t have to mean closing the door completely on my old designer faves. Rather, Betsy helped me devise a three-step process for working out what to keep and what to bid farewell.

This closet cleanout strategy has very little to do with how things fit and far more to do with how things feel—try it out yourself!

Step 1: Sort Your Stuff into “You” and “Old You” Piles
Go through everything in your closet and pull out all the items that feel like the “old you.” If it’s hard to work out which pieces fall into this category, pull anything you haven’t worn in the past year.

Step 2: Tap into the Item’s Energy
Pick up the first item and DO NOT TRY IT ON OR LOOK AT YOURSELF HOLDING IT IN THE MIRROR (this is important, hence caps). Instead, close your eyes and visualize yourself putting it on. Now focus on the space just below your belly-button (the seat of our intuition), and take note of how it feels. Happy, expansive and open means it’s a keeper. Closed, tight, or sad? Then it’s time to let it go.

Step 3: Donate, Gift, and Let Energy Flow!
Take any items you’re discarding to a clothing exchange, or gift them to friends you think will appreciate and look great in them. (Note: you can use the same process in Step 2 to work out who to gift what!) This will keep the flow of energy open, inviting fabulous new items that reflect the new you into their place!

A Hair Shaman’s Tips for Lovely & Lustrous Locks

Planning my recent trip to L.A., I knew I wanted to fit in a visit with Andi Scarbrough, (aka @crown_works on Instagram)—a “hair shaman” all my friends have been seeing. My hair has always been flimsy, and decades of bleaching and blowing it out have really taken their toll. Not to mention the additional “stress damage” inflicted on my poor locks of late.

Yes, this is apparently a thing, as I learned on the London leg of my book tour. When I stopped by a local salon for a bangs trim, I found myself lamenting to the stylist that my hair was feeling weaker than ever, with large sections where it just seemed to have stopped growing. “Have you been extra stressed lately?” he asked. Uh … just a little. For the past two years, I’ve been writing and promoting a book, while simultaneously running my online magazine, The Numinous, and launching an online spiritual mentoring program as well as a “sober curious” event series. All while grappling with relentless multiple “opportunities” to overcome my fear of public speaking. Apparently, when things get hairy (pun intended), the scalp is often the first place to show it.

Deep conditioning treatments and split-end serums are one thing, but this felt like a job for spirit. I mean, why go the trad route when you can get witchy with it?! And so, cut to a cloudy Sunday morning at the Frame salon in Santa Monica (L.A.’s “June gloom” is also a thing), where I’m settling into Andi’s chair, ready for her to work her magic.

We begin with me choosing a crystal and a card to help guide the session, and continue with a special conditioning treatment using root-stimulating essential oils of rosemary and cedar. Andi uses reiki and sound-tuning forks to stimulate my heart and crown chakras, while also delivering psychic messages about my current state of mind. Dusting the ends with her scissors to close the treatment, I’m handed the offcuts in a little envelope to be burned ceremonially at a time of my choosing.

It’s too soon to tell if the treatment will have any impact on growth, but my hair has been feeling noticeably softer, shinier and more lustrous since the treatment. I’m planning to burn the offcuts to complete the process on the night of the Cancer Full Moon.

Do you have thinning or less-than-lustrous hair? Try the hair shaman’s volumizing secrets:

The days leading up to (and including) the full moon are the best days for a haircut, as hair grows strongest and thickest during this period of the lunar cycle. Cutting on the full moon itself can be an intentional way to release stress, past trauma, or negative energy.

If you cut your hair during any time of transition and/or gratitude, keep the offcuts to make a ceremonial offering marking the occasion. These can be burned, buried, let fly on the wind, or washed away by a river or the ocean.

Use the condition of your hair to divine your current state of mind and to practice self-love. “A woman’s opinion of herself shows up in how she cares for her hair,” says Andi Scarbrough.

The way you wear your hair can be used to protect and activate the crown chakra (what connects us to our higher self/spirit/universal truth/God/source etc.). For maximum impact—and a connection to that power—pile it on top of your head.

Use a crystal comb—as in a comb made of actual quartz crystal! “Using a crystal comb transforms a regular at-home deep conditioning treatment to beauty ritual—helping to clear your crown and re-energize both your intention and your hair!” says Andi.
