Your Zodiac Sign Can Help You Love Your Body. Here’s How

Your Zodiac Sign Can Help You Love Your Body. Here’s How

Your body. Pretty awesome, right? I mean, literally where would you be without it? Still, we’re pretty down on our bodies: hating on what we see in the mirror, filling it with toxic food, starving it to a certain size, or working it to the bone without making time to relax.

I know I’ve been guilty of all of the above! I suffered from an eating disorder in my teens, abused alcohol in my 20s and early 30s, and have been a lifelong workaholic, spending hours hunched in front of my computer. But over the past few years, I’ve made it a goal to love my body. I want to show my body the love she needs, and the love she deserves.

But knowing how to love your body isn’t easy—and it looks different for everyone. For me, getting into a regular yoga practice has been instrumental in accepting my myself in all my changing states. I’m also mainly sober these days and eat an 80 percent plant-based diet, which helps my body feel more vibrant and energized than ever. Finally, I make a point of saying nice things to my body, and getting regular massages to show her my appreciation!

As we move into bikini season, here are some ways each sign can begin to practice body love. And since your rising sign rules your physical appearance, read for that too!

If you’re an: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Fire signs are all about action and can suffer physical burnout, meaning aching limbs, tight, hunched up shoulders, and bruises and scrapes from all that time on the front line of life. Yes, your body is a machine … and it requires regular servicing to keep it running smoothly! Regular bodywork is a must—even a DIY massage counts! Fire signs also tend to be competitive—so set an intention to not compare your body to others.

If you’re a: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
The earth signs are the most associated with our physicality, and when out of balance can either overindulge or get super regimented about food and exercise. What earth signs are really good at though, is enjoying sensuous pleasure—so taking time to prepare food that’s healthy and delicious is a way to show your body how much you care. Try Jessica Murnane’s One Part Plant recipe book (she’s Taurean Lena Dunham’s nutritionist).

If you’re a: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Air signs can spend a lot of time in their heads, treating their bodies a bit like an add on. As such, engaging with any practice that helps you get back into your body will be a way to show your appreciation for the precious physical envelope that she is! Yoga, dance practice, and self-pleasure are all great places to start. Air signs can also be over analytical and self critical, so meditation can help you learn to silence the inner body critic.

If you’re a: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
So sentimental, water signs! Your emo tendencies can pull you into a negative spiral, with a lot of “coulds” and “shoulds” thrown into the mix as you reminisce about times your bod looked “better” to you. To counter this, think about ways you can literally romance your body—like you would your partner! Yes, I’m talking all out rose petals and scented oils in your bath water, beautiful lingerie and fancy dinners for one. Because you’re so SO worth it!

When We’re Honest About What We Want, Life Magically Blossoms

When We’re Honest About What We Want, Life Magically Blossoms

By Gala Darling

When We’re Honest About What We Want, Life Magically Blossoms

My first exposure to magic was when I attempted to cast love spells on thoroughly undeserving teenage boys. They were gangly and awkward, but their appeal was beyond description. We would talk on the phone all night; and in typical teenage-boy fashion, they prattled on, totally unaware of my amorous heart.

Despite my best efforts, the love spells never worked. And when, a couple of years later, I began dating my first serious boyfriend, I traded my obsession with magic for an obsession with men. How did they work? What did they want? They were endlessly fascinating to me, and still are. Truthfully, I’ve been trying to figure men out ever since.

Over a decade later, I found myself at a low point, in a crumbling marriage. Again, I turned to magic—and the friendship of women—for solace. I needed so desperately to regain a sense of control in my life, to know that this mistake I had made could be fixed. Every month, I joined a group of women in a New York apartment, where we would sit on the floor, chant, meditate, pull tarot cards, and get clear about our intentions. It was in those circles that I learned how to reclaim my power, how to send my energy out into the universe, and—most importantly—I was reminded that no one decision can ruin you.

I went to an astrology retreat in Tulum, hoping for a sign. I got what I asked for. Almost every woman there had been divorced… and was thriving. When I got back to New York, I told my husband it was over. He moved out two weeks later, and my life was mine again.

Ever since, I’ve been writing and speaking about my life-changing experiences with magic, spirituality, and what I call Radical Self Love. I’m determined to help as many women as possible extract themselves from the grips of sadness and self-doubt. It is my life’s work, and I cannot think of a more valuable way to spend my time.

What is Radical Self Love? As Horoscope.com’s new Spirit Goddess, I’ll be telling you a lot about this incredible practice in the coming months, but here’s a teaser: Radical Self Love is a personal process in which you examine your thoughts and behavior and relentlessly toss anything that is hindering you from being your best, must salubrious self. Here’s what the process looks like for me:

1. Admit what isn’t working. What keeps you up at night? What makes you tense? Make a list. Be radically honest! When we get real with ourselves about the things that bring us pain, we have the power to reclaim them.

2. Know where you want to go next. Look around for people who are doing outlandish, creative, wonderful things—and ask yourself: How could I do that, and put my own magic on it?

3. Act your way into it. The magic really occurs when you get out of your head and into your body. “Put your money where your mouth is,” so to speak.

4. Rinse and repeat. You have to keep noticing what sucks, keep thinking about where you want to go next, and keep acting. The process is never over.

I believe that when we know ourselves and can be honest about what we want, everything in our life magically blossoms. And deepening that connection to ourselves is one of the most spiritual experiences we can have.

I’m so excited to be joining Horoscope.com as your Spirit Goddess. I have so many fun adventures to tell you about, things for you to try, and stories to share. This is going to be fabulous! See you here next week, and every Monday.

A Ticket For One Will Take You Exactly Where You Need to Go

The Taj Mahal sparkled in the half-light of dawn. My eyes widened. The sight was more than marvelous. It was mystical. The cells in my body pulsed with a feeling I couldn’t name.

I inhaled. Exhaled. Smiled, my face turned up to the rising sun. Beside me were couples, tour groups, smatterings of conversations in different languages. But it was just me, the Taj Mahal, and a tiny feeling of pride trickling through my veins.

Before I had come to Agra, I had heard the concerned warnings of friends and family: You’ll be bored. You’ll be lonely. Will you be safe?

But here I was—safe, content, and feeling perfectly in tune with the Universe—and myself.

Since then, I’ve traveled solo a lot, despite the fact that I have plenty of family and friends who are more than willing to come along. I’m also lucky to have a loving partner who shares my passion for travel and is always willing to board a plane, train, automobile, or camel’s back at the drop of a dime. Still, I thoroughly enjoy traveling alone (I’m doing a massive solo trip through Europe in May, and I’d love for you to follow along on Instagram!). I believe that everyone should take a big solo trip at least once. Here’s why:

Solo Travel Cranks Up Your Confidence
When you travel by yourself, the planning and decision making are all up to you. While the responsibility can be intimidating (in India, where chaos reigns supreme, it was intense), it’s also rewarding.  For example, when I traveled around the world last summer (hitting eight countries on four continents), I took great pride in the fact that I had planned my own itinerary, all by myself, even though it was super complicated.  Being the sole engineer of your travel experiences can bolster the spirit and boost the confidence like nothing else.

Solo Travel Lets You Be Selfish
A solo vacation means you can do what you want, when you want, without having to consider the wants or needs of a travel companion, and this can be empowering in and of itself. In Agra, I was super indulgent—I splurged on a nice hotel, spent hours stuffing my face at the city’s best restaurants, and luxuriated in the sights, sounds, and smells of one of India’s most historic cities. I could spend an afternoon on a single block, I never had to check in to see if anyone else was enjoying the experience as much as me. Not only was it amazing in the moment, but it was superb practice for self-care back home. After all, when life is overwhelming, there’s nothing better than tuning into what you need.

The Solo Traveler Makes Incredible, Life-Changing Connections
It’s a travel fact: When you’re by yourself, you make way more connections than you do when you have a partner. At least that’s what I’ve found. Solo, I’m much more willing to start up conversations with locals and travelers in markets, temples, and everywhere in between. Even though I will never forget the sight of the Taj Mahal in the sunrise, the memories that come back to me most from that trip are the small, impromptu conversations I had with total strangers.

Have you ever traveled solo? Where? Come share your story on Facebook!

What’s Your Secret Power Color? Your Body Knows.

What’s Your Secret Power Color? Your Body Knows.

By Ruby Warrington

What’s Your Secret Power Color? Your Body Knows.

In “healing” speak, the chakras represent the seven energy centers of the body. Running from the bottom of the tailbone up to the crown of the head, these seven spots are especially key for harnessing our full potential. That’s because our life force energy (some might call it “spirit”) runs through these cosmic portals, “powering up” different organs and, in turn, ruling different areas of our lives.

Optimum wellbeing is the result of all seven chakras spinning at full speed, while blockages in any area can lead to unease—often showing as emotional issues first, going on to manifest as physical ailments if not addressed.

So, how to get your chakras spinning at top velocity? Since each chakra is represented by a different color, the color of your outfit can help “charge up” the energy center that needs a boost. It’s a genius practice that, as a New York transplant who has most definitely adopted the local tradition of mainly wearing black, isn’t always the easiest to follow. That’s why I often wear just a touch of the chakra power color I need—a canary-yellow bra, a green crystal pendant, hot pink socks….

There’s a total guide to the chakra system in my book, Material Girl, Mystical World, but check out the below tips on how to find the color that will make you feel—and radiate—amazing vibes!

ROOT CHAKRA
Location: Base of the tail bone.
Governs: Our overall sense of safety and material stability.
Connect to it for: An important meeting or interview.
Power color: Red. It’s no wonder this color is traditionally said to bring more confidence to whoever wears it. Even a slick of bright red lipstick can do the trick!

 * * *

SACRAL CHAKRA
Location: Just below the navel.
Governs: Our creativity and sexuality, as well as how we feel about ourselves and others.
Connect to it for: Sexual confidence.
Power color: Orange, like the burning embers of our desire and the flames fanning our creative visions. Try a pretty tangerine balconette bra to harness some flirty energy before a date.

  * * *

SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA
Location: Just above the navel.
Governs: Our willpower, self-esteem, and drive to get things done.
Connect to it for: An energy boost.
Power color: Yellow. Yep, just like the Sun, aka the cosmic power charger that literally gets us up in the morning. How about a pair of bright yellow sneakers for your AM sweat session?

  * * *

HEART CHAKRA
Location: Center of the chest.
Governs: Our sense of compassion and unconditional love for ourselves and others.
Connect to it for: Empathy, serenity.
Power color: Green, as a reminder that we’re all bonded by our connection to the natural world. Think gorgeous emerald tones, not the slime seen on YouTube video tutorials!

 * * *

 THROAT CHAKRA
Location: Center of the throat.
Governs: Our ability to express ourselves and communicate with others.
Connect to it for: An important conversation, when you really need to be heard.
Power color: Blue. Perhaps the easiest color to incorporate into your everyday look—faded vintage denim totally counts.

   * * *

 THIRD EYE CHAKRA
Location: Middle of the forehead.
Governs: Our imagination, wisdom, and intuition.
Connect to it for: A creativity boost.
Power color: Indigo. Think deep ocean hues, since this part of our psyche is also ruled by the water element. Bonus: This dark color is a great alternative to head-to-toe black.

 * * *

 CROWN CHAKRA
Location: Top of the head.
Governs: Our higher self and connection to spirit.
Connect to it for: A day filled with creativity and clarity.
Power color: White, which is one of the reasons white is so popular in spiritual circles! Also, it looks amazing for a summer barbeque—a great outfit option for when you know you’ll have a run-in with your ex. This is the color to keep you focused on what you really want in life.

Free Your Tush, and Your Soul Will Follow

Free Your Tush, and Your Soul Will Follow

Skinny jeans, RIP. It’s official, the reign of spray-on skinnies is officially ovah. In fact, recent strolls around Brooklyn’s hip Williamsburg show the pendulum has swung past straight leg and landed smack on mom jeans. And my belly is breathing a huge sigh of relief.

As a fashion writer in London, I had amassed quite a collection of skinnies—spray-on drainpipes by All Saints, hip-hugging micro flares by MiH, at least five pairs by J Brand. Peeling them off at the end of the day sometimes felt like being released from a Victorian corset. I actually think my skinny jeans habit might also have been a contributing factor to ongoing digestive issues during that period. For real!

I can breathe again!

But when I launched The Numinous and began a deeper investigation of the modern spirituality scene, I began skipping my skinnies. Drainpipe denim and gong healing workshops do not make for happy bedfellows, as anybody who’s tried sitting cross-legged for extended periods in a pair of Cheap Mondays will know!

Instead, I found myself seeking out clothing that allowed ample room for deep belly pranayama breathing, for movement, and even for sitting still. After all, you can’t exactly detach at a Zen Buddhist meditation workshop if your mind is fixated on the pain of stiff denim cutting off your circulation. And that’s why I’ve come to embrace what I call healing circle chic.

Right now, in fact, my favorite pair of pants is a pair of drop-crotch batik pants with a loosely elasticized waistband that sits super low on my hips.

Happy belly, happy heart!

Ahhh-lll the better for letting it all hang out—in a physical and emotional sense. After all, the more energy spent agonizing over a tight waistband, the less headspace for deep and meaningful convos with your higher self—and we all know those self-talks are non-negotiable for living your most cosmically aligned life, right? Those loose-flowing robes favored by religious gurus? I get it.

But you don’t have to go totally shapeless. It’s all about finding a look you love. Some pieces that might speak to your soul style: Bias-cut slip dresses (for curves without the corset effect), kaftans (natch), and billowing outsize shirts. And yes, “healing circle chic” includes denim. In fact, I recently found a pair of vintage Levis mom jeans I could absolutely rock during an extended meditation. So let’s all take a deep breath—and let our style fit the expanse of our soul.

A Crystal a Day Brings Good Vibes To Stay

A Crystal a Day Brings Good Vibes To Stay

My phone feels like a sixth limb, so you’d think I’d embrace wearable tech, right? Wrong. In fact, the very idea makes me feel on the cusp of a mild anxiety attack.

But while the idea of attaching a piece of technology to my person makes me cringe, I’m in love with “wearable healing,” aka crystals. I never leave the house without tiny rubies (how could I?) my vintage diamond engagement ring, and an opal piece created by Communion By Joy, one of my favorite designers.

You see, while the quartz crystals in computers (you know, the ones that make up the silicon) help you tap into data—how many calories you burned, hours you slept, steps you took—the crystals that make up a gorgeous amethyst pendant help you tap into your inner knowing. The opal I cherish? It’s supposed to inspire love, hope, innocence, and happiness. How could I possibly leave home without it?

And while I admit the crystal jewelry scene can get a little crunchy, there are some amazing designers who make creations as chic as they are soul-enriching. Here, some of my favorites that deliver gorgeous fashion right along with heady vibes.

Communion by Joy
Describing her pieces as “sacred art for the modern mystic,” L.A.-based Joy Smith is inspired by the mysteries of life “beyond the veil.” My personal favorites are her raw gemstone rings. Also clutch: Her pieces are ethically sourced and made from recycled gold.

Pound Jewelry
So many women in my
Numinous crew  are proud owners of the signature pendulum crystal pendant from Pound, which doubles as a divination tool. Also amazing: their cluster crystal pendants. These have so much energy that they can be used to cleanse other stones simply by leaving a stone that needs clearing on the cluster overnight.

Gorgeous Pound pendants

Jill Urwin
With a background in fashion buying, Urwin, who co-founded London’s high-vibe boutique and event space She’s Lost Control is all about merging the edgy, the modern, and the mystical. Her favorite stone to work with is the Herkimer Diamond—known for its unrivaled natural symmetry.

Rock n Raw
While the UK brand is known for its striking and delicate “Ultimate Guardian” pendant, I personally adore the signature crystal-set head-chain (pictured at top, perfect for Burning Man!). Delicate and super high end, the pink tourmaline “Gentle Courage” pendant is pretty close to the top of my wish list!

The Rock n Raw “Floating Guardian” pendant

Alexandra Derby
Featuring different stones for each moon phase, Derby’s unique collections are a beautiful—and powerful—way to connect to the different phases of the moon cycle. She also has a pendant set with each birthstone to correspond to each sign of the zodiac.

Melinda Lee Holm
I adore Melinda’s “Prescription Adornments”—in which she creates a custom piece based on a tarot reading! The two-part process is divided into “Gathering Wisdom” and “Choosing Aesthetics,” making each piece a personalized talisman to tap into your inner powers.

The Rocky Road to Loving Yourself Is So Worth Taking

Two years ago, my besties and I planned an epic girls’ adventure in Brazil. The itinerary was perfection: eight days of relaxation and recklessness (the best combo!) in Rio and Salvador de Bahia. But instead of perfecting my Samba moves, researching the best Caipirinhas on Instagram, or practicing my Portuguese, my mind fixated on how I’d look in my bikini on Copacabana Beach.

The feelings had taken root in a Manhattan boutique. Swimsuits surrounding me, I glared at my reflection in the mirror of the changing room. Self-defeating statements swirled through my mind: My stomach was bloated. My thighs were too wide. I didn’t have enough definition in my biceps. I dug my fingers into my hips, pinching my love handles and wrinkling my nose in disgust.

When I left the boutique, I had a plan: I banned carbs and ran five miles every single day for the next fourteen days. By the time I boarded the plane to Rio, I had lost seven pounds and you could grate cheese on my collarbone. I was also physically and mentally drained. And, oh yeah, I still didn’t like the way I looked.

I know. This is madness. What is it with the relationship so many of us have with our bodies? We’re pressured by mass media, and then we pile on self-critique to the point of abuse. If the lack of thigh gap isn’t getting us down, we’re obsessing over the size of our posterior or the cinch of our waist. Minimizing ourselves has become a mantra; comparing ourselves to unrealistic body ideals a way of life.

Awareness helps, but it’s not a cure. After all, I think we can all agree that the concept of being “bikini ready” for a trip, or anything else, is just silly. But knowing that doesn’t change the way we feel when we’re confronted with a mirror and two tiny pieces of fabric. While I’d like to say I’ve realized the error of my ways since the Brazilian trip, I still struggle with body image on a semi-regular basis.

I worked myself sick for this body—and no, this picture wasn’t worth it.

I’ve also realized that loving your body is a process. Here are the steps I’m taking to get there:

I’m healing my heart
I’ve gone batty over the cellulite on the back of my thighs while barely paying attention to the healthiness of the heart beating blood to the area of my body I’m fixating on. How we nurture the internal matters. For me, that means eating more whole foods and drinking more water to help my body glow from the inside out.

I’m loving the textures of me
Instead of obsessing over my body’s size and shape, I’m focusing on the texture. This gal has been investing on expensive creams and luxurious bubble baths—the emollients make my skin supple and oh-so-touchable. Yep, I’m treasuring my shell and appreciating all its dimples!

I’m hanging out in my undies
Easier said than done, sure, but proclaiming it is the first step to owning it. How, you may ask? Here’s what I’ve been doing: Whenever I’m home, I’m hanging out in underwear only. Being able to actually see the lines and curves of my body—instead of covering them up—has helped me understand, accept, and love them.

Yep, the road to loving yourself is a rocky one. But it’s so worth the journey.

This (G-rated) Massage Will Give You a Post-O Glow

I don’t know about you, but my favorite thing about any facial is the massage part. And my least favorite is the slathering on of layer after layer of products, especially when the therapist often finishes up by recommending a total beauty cabinet overhaul. No thanks! As a rule, I feel about my skincare regime the way I do about food—the less complicated, the better.

Which brings me to FaceLove, a new facial concept that’s all about the massage part! A session at FaceLove is designed to do the smoothing, glow-ifying work of fillers and lasers with only the power of touch, “facial exercise,” acupressure, and a hint of aromatherapy oils.

I stopped by at lunch on a Wednesday, in dire need (aren’t we all?) of a soothing time out. Settling back into sheepskin coziness, my subconscious selected the soothing lavender oil, which I was instructed to breathe deeply into my being. And then the massage began, with a vigorous scrubbing motion up and down my jawline (this felt like the “exercise” part!) gradually spreading to incorporate my ears, neck, and the tops of my shoulders.

I’d opted for the 30-minute “Pure Love” treatment, with an emphasis on lymphatic drainage and the release of emotional stress. And as my therapist honed in on specific acupressure points on my skull, I felt the tensions of the day begin to melt away. As I zoned out, the honking of a truck outside took on the timbre of a monastic chant; a conversation between another therapist and her next customer gently entered my consciousness as if it were beamed from another planet.

A brisk once over with a multi-faceted roller, designed to lift the skin and massage the facial fascia, brought me back into the room. The finishing touch? A few swipes from a soothing jade roller, used for centuries in Chinese medicine to cool, tone and tighten the complexion.

Overall, the treatment felt like an infinitely more considered take on the ten-minute shoulder workout you sometimes get while your polish is drying at a traditional nail studio. Checking my face in the mirror on my way out, my eyes appeared larger, and my cheekbones more defined. Not a “miracle” product in use! Best of all, I felt taken care of in a way that only the touch from another human can deliver. And that feeling was what held me for the rest of the day.

Of course, it’s not exactly practical to pop out for a facial massage every day of the week. But a DIY treatment has many of the same benefits, and practicing some self love reminds you that even on the busiest, most hectic deadline-driven days, you’re a human being who needs nourishing to live her best life.

Here, the geniuses at FaceLove share their top massage tips for smoother, happier looking skin. Try them when you’re experiencing stress, and trust me, you’ll be ready to face the world in a whole new way:

  1. Cup your whole face with the palms of your hands to liberally apply face cream.
  1. Massage in a spiral motion from the center of the face outwards towards the temples.
  1. To massage the upper eyelids, slide the fingers outwards from the bridge of the nose. For the lower eyelids, gently slide the fingers outwards in an arc as if ironing out the fine lines at the corners of the eyes. Finish by sliding down towards the sides of the cheeks.
  1. Cup your whole face in both hands and slide your hands outward towards the bottoms of your ears. End by gently squeezing your earlobes.

This Stealth Little Ritual Will Attract Abundance

This Stealth Little Ritual Will Attract Abundance

Several years ago, I found myself scouring Shopstyle in search of the perfect wallet. This “perfect wallet” was different than ones I would have looked for in the past: I was looking for one that was red, gold, or green, three colors that would make my wallet a money magnet. I had learned about this theory from my friend Gala Darling, and as an entrepreneur living in expensive NYC, I felt I needed to give it a go.

It took another year or so for me to find a red wallet that also fit my personal style—one by Philip Lim that was even embossed with a subtle dollar sign. Flawless! Whether it’s played any role in my never missing a rent check for the past few years, I can’t really say. But what I do know is that a recent Skype meeting with a woman known as The Modern Money Witch (a.k.a. Lara-Rose Duong) took the concept of using your wallet to actively attract cash to a whole new level.

And OF COURSE she reached out to me during Venus retrograde. The planet ruling love and abundance has been in a backspin since March 4, 2017 (resuming direct motion on April 15), during which time all things concerning love, money, and self-worth have been up for review. And according to Lara-Rose, love is money. It’s the grown-up symbol for the nurturing (food, shelter, hugs) we receive as love when we’re babies.

Step one in Lara-Rose’s system for receiving more money in your life is to create an actual abundance altar in your wallet. Fun! And what better activity for the April 11 Libra full moon (a sign ruled by Venus), to get active with your manifestation process?

Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating an altar in your wallet:

1. Take everything out of your wallet and smudge it with smoke from white sage or Palo Santo incense sticks.

2. Hold your empty wallet with both hands and set an intention. Something like: “I am open to receiving abundance so that I may share it with the world,” works. Say it as you hold your wallet.

3. Choose an “altar” in your wallet—it can be an individual pocket or an entire section.

4. Place items in your wallet altar. Some classic things to include: an image of Lakshmi, or other abundance icon (I chose a card of prosperity Goddess Abundantia); a piece of citrine, a silver dollar, or an abundance spell, sealed with a pentagon sign. And feel free to choose items that feel meaningful to you, too.

5. Also include a paper money offering to your abundance icon. This bill is not to be spent, but can be refreshed annually on a date that resonates with you (like the Spring or Fall Equinox, Beltane, or your birthday).

6. Toss our old receipts, business cards, etc., and return only the items you absolutely need to your wallet. Commit to regularly clearing out any unneeded items to keep energetic pathways of abundance clear.

Need a Little Hope? Start With Wonder.

Can I let you in on a little secret? Sometimes I forget to stop and feel the awe when I globetrot. There are forever things to plan, places to be, things to do, people to meet, and things to go eat!

My trips are often hectic because I’m simultaneously working. But it’s a common phenomenon: Even on vacation, you’ve likely felt “switched on.” You’re mired in logistical details. You’re caught up in chronicling the experience for social media. Your mind is working a mile a minute as you breathlessly bound from one location to another. But it doesn’t have to be that way! In these times of conflict and uncertainty, travel should be an opportunity to nurture the soul, not another opportunity to stress out!

So how do we step back from the hustle, bustle, and minutiae of traveling and turn it into a journey that fills us with peace, purpose, and a sense of hope? Here’s what I’m trying, more and more, to do:

Relinquish control
Your itinerary doesn’t need to be on lock—once you’ve got a trip planned, it’s okay to let go and let the journey unfold. In Gift From The Sea (a great book for any seeker!) Anne Morrow Lindbergh said, “If you surrender completely to the moments as they pass, you live more richly those moments.” In other words, instead of micromanaging every aspect of your journey, leave yourself open to unexpected experiences, like the conversation with a stranger in a cafe or an afternoon wandering city streets. My visit to Cairo bloomed into Technicolor when I decided to trust and let Fathi, a local, lead me around the city after he found me on a busy street corner looking lost. It’s often the unexpected encounters that grow us the most.

Quiet your mind
Spiritual wellbeing and meditative practice go hand in hand, so be sure to make time in your travel schedule for some quiet contemplation. This could be as simple as taking a twenty minute break during the day to do some focused breathing, or as structured as signing up for a yoga class in the city you’re visiting. I did my first yoga class EVER in India, and I loved it so much that I signed up for another when I was vacationing in Oman.

Visit destinations that ooze spirituality
The Catholic priest Henri J.M. Nouwen said, “The spiritual life does not remove us from the world but leads us deeper into it.” For this reason, I’ve been trying to cultivate greater spiritual mindfulness as I explore this beautiful, dissonant earth. And what better way than to visit the world’s sacred sites? While you may not be a believer, I dare you to walk through Barcelona’s cavernous Sagrada Família church without feeling awash with peace, wonder, and optimism. Machu Picchu, the Incan citadel found high in the Andes mountain range, will also dazzle you with its energy. So, that’s my suggestion, fellow travelers: Seek out and soak in the restorative powers of such magical places—then bring that magic home and spread it around.
